Doctor Fonda was formed five years ago, and was organised principally as a platform for singer/songwriter Jon Diss. The band's debut set proved popular with friends, locals and internet followers, and provided a solid base from which to grow - with the exception of a hand-over between lead guitarists, the line-up has remained unchanged since this conception, and the members' familiarity has proved a definite strength through the years. The current line-up of the four-piece comprises: Jon Diss, principal singer, and guitarist; Paul Farley, lead guitar; Kieron Waterhouse on bass, with responsibility for backing vocals; and Rick Everest on the drums. Each member brings a wide range of abilities and influences, and each played a prominent part in other local bands prior to the formation of Doctor Fonda. Most of today's popular music tends to fall all too readily into categories, but Doctor Fonda's blend of influences and styles makes the band's genre refreshingly diverse. As such, it is probably best described as Alternative Rock - an appropriately broad church that manages to encompass soulful vocal lines, the bite of distorted riffs, catchy melodies and driving energy. Fans of Muse, System and Audioslave will feel at home with Doctor Fonda. Doctor Fonda has attracted interest from a number of independent labels, and has performed at several high-profile venues - including the Carling academy in Islington and the Borderline off Tottenham Court Road - as well as in popular Sussex clubs and at several universities in the South East. Docor Fonda's live set is an energetic display of musicianship, lively, invigorating and multi-layered. It reflects the evolution of the band's songs over the last few years well - depending on the demands of the venue, pop-rock meets Deep South metal, folk harmonies and progressive epics within one set, yet there are common threads that make these tunes work together well, and demand further listens. To date, the band has recorded a total of five demos, each reflecting a progressively more talented, creative and cohesive approach. The latest, 'Fail', which you hold in your hands (or is preferably running in the CD player as you read this!) is the band's most commercial work yet, but also its most accomplished structurally and vocally. It shares many familiar elements with the band's back catalogue, much of which is available to hear at www.myspace.com/doctorfonda.
